Free Wi-Fi
In Switzerland, users usually need to complete a short registration process before accessing public Wi-Fi networks. Most networks require a one-time SMS verification. So you need a phone number to use free wifi.
Once registered, you can use free internet access in many places across the country, such as:
Hotels, Cafés & Restaurants
Most hotels, restaurants, cafés, and bars offer free Wi-Fi for guests, making it easy to stay connected while traveling.
Public Wi-Fi Hotspots
The most reliable places to find free public Wi-Fi in Switzerland are:
SBB train stations
Public transport like PostBus (till end of 2026)
Major shopping centers such as Migros and Coop
Global chains like Starbucks and McDonaldâs
Airports
Rural Areas & Mountains
Free Wi-Fi is becoming more common in rural areas and mountain regions. However, in many remote mountain areas you may have no connection at all, especially while hiking or driving through alpine passes. Itâs always a good idea to download offline maps before your trip.
But some ski resorts even offer Wi-Fi directly on the slopes, including Saas-Fee, Zermatt, and Davos.
SBB Stations
Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) provides free Wi-Fi at more than 80 train stations through the âSBB-FREEâ network. After a one-time registration with your mobile number, you can access the internet for free. Sessions are limited to 60 minutes, but you can reconnect again after a two-hour break.
â ïž Important: Swiss trains do not offer onboard Wi-Fi.
PostBus Wi-Fi
Many Swiss PostBuses currently offer free Wi-Fi. However, according to current plans, this service will only remain available until the end of 2026.
SIM Cards & Mobile Internet
You can easily buy prepaid SIM cards in Switzerland, including directly at Zurich Airport.
