You can find our complete family travel packing list here.

If you’re traveling to Switzerland, especially for hiking and outdoor adventures between spring and autumn, this is what we’d specifically recommend 🇨🇭🏔️

Switzerland’s weather and landscapes change incredibly fast. One day can include warm sunshine, cold wind, rain, snow on mountain passes, swimming in lakes, and hiking through alpine meadows, sometimes all within a few hours.

Your packing should definitely reflect that.

🌿 Essentials for Switzerland (Spring–Autumn)

🥾 Proper hiking shoes

Honestly one of the most important things.

Swiss hiking trails are rocky, muddy, slippery and steep.

We personally love hiking sandals for summer family hikes because they’re lightweight, waterproof and practical around lakes and waterfalls.

🧥 Rain jacket

Always bring one.

Even when the forecast looks perfect, mountain weather changes FAST in Switzerland.

We almost always pack lightweight waterproof jackets for the whole family.

🧅 Layers (“onion principle”)

Very important in the Alps.

Even during hot summer days in the valleys, mountain temperatures can suddenly feel cold.

We usually pack:
• T-shirts
• Fleece/pullover (Lightweight insulated layer)
• Rain jacket

🌞 Sun hat & sunscreen

The mountain sun is STRONG in Switzerland - even when temperatures feel cool.

Especially at higher elevations or near lakes.

💧 Refillable water bottle

One of the best Switzerland hacks:

Tap water and most public fountains are drinkable.

If a fountain is NOT safe to drink from, there must be a sign.

We refill constantly during hikes.

🍫 Snacks (especially with kids)

Very important for Swiss hikes 😅

We always bring:
• Fruit
• Sandwiches
• Nuts
• Chocolate/snacks

Picnic breaks honestly make hiking with kids much easier and more fun.

🎒 Day backpack

For:
• Extra layers
• Snacks
• Water
• Rain jackets
• Towels/swimwear

🥽 Swimwear

Even if you mainly come for hiking.

Switzerland has:
• Beautiful alpine lakes
• Rivers
• Waterfalls
• Public swimming spots

In summer we almost always end up swimming somewhere unexpectedly.

🧺 Quick-drying towel

Super useful for:
• Lakes
• Waterfalls
• Public swimming areas
• Kids

🔋 Power bank

Especially helpful during:
• Long hiking days
• Train rides (sometimes there are plug-ins)
• Navigation
• Lots of photos/videos

🗺️ Offline maps

Mountain signal can disappear quickly.

We usually download:
• Google Maps offline
• SchweizMobil routes
• swisstopo maps

🌦️ Weather apps & webcams

Before every hike we check:
• MeteoSwiss app
• Local webcams

Especially in spring and early summer, there can still be snow higher up.

Just google:
“place name + webcam”

This helps check:
• Visibility
• Snow conditions
• Fog/clouds
• Real-time weather

🥶 Extra for Spring & Autumn (April–May / September–October)

Swiss mountains can still feel very cold outside peak summer.

🧤 Warm fleece or insulated jacket

Especially for:
• Early mornings
• Cable cars
• Mountain peaks
• Sunset hikes

🧦 Warm socks

Very underrated 😅

Cold feet can ruin hikes quickly.

👖 Long pants

Especially useful in:
• Windy weather
• Colder mountain regions
• Forest hikes

🔌 Travel adapter for Switzerland

Switzerland uses the Type J plug, which is slightly different from most European countries. Some standard European 2-pin plugs work, but not all plugs fit properly into Swiss sockets.

Our recommendation:
Bring a universal travel adapter or a specific Switzerland Type J adapter - especially for laptops, cameras or larger chargers.

✨ Other things that are surprisingly useful in Switzerland:
Comfortable walking shoes for cities
Proper hiking shoes/boots for mountain trails

🕶️ Sunglasses
Mountain sun and reflections from lakes/snow can be intense.

🧴 Lip balm & moisturizer
Mountain air can feel very dry - especially at higher elevations.

🪙 Some cash (CHF)
Cards work almost everywhere, but small mountain huts, farm shops or rural places sometimes prefer cash.

🛒 Reusable shopping bag
Swiss supermarkets usually charge extra for bags.

🚻 Public toilet coins
Some public toilets cost around 1–2 CHF.

🍴 Picnic equipment
One of the BEST ways to save money in Switzerland:
Buy supermarket food and picnic outside with mountain views

✨ Our experience

As a Swiss family, we’ve learned that the best thing you can pack for Switzerland is flexibility.

Weather changes quickly.
Plans change quickly.
And honestly - the best moments often happen unexpectedly:
• Swimming in a random lake
• Finding waterfalls
• Eating picnic snacks with mountain views
• Watching cows in alpine meadows 🏔️❤️

Note:
This is not a complete packing list, especially regarding personal medication or specific hiking equipment. It’s simply what we personally recommend as a family exploring Switzerland between spring and autumn.
