Living the dream of traveling Australia while working as full-time creators is achievable, but it requires planning, consistency, and a deep passion for both travel and storytelling. My partner Tia and I, along with our dog Zenna, started our journey in 2019, traveling in our 1975 Kombi van. We’ve learned so much along the way, and in this guide, we’ll share the lessons we’ve picked up on becoming full-time creators while on the road.

1. Establish Your Personal Brand

Before hitting the road, it’s crucial to define your personal brand. What do you want to share with the world? What makes your story unique? Think of your brand as your online identity – it’s how you will connect with your audience.

Our Story:
In 2019, when we first hit the road in our Kombi, we didn’t have everything figured out. The initial idea was simple: we wanted to travel, share our experiences, and document life on the road. But as we spent more time on the road, we realized that our unique angle was our lifestyle—living and working from a van while bringing along our dog Zenna. We slowly built our niche around van life, pet-friendly travel, and showcasing hidden gems around Australia that most people wouldn’t know about. That authenticity has helped us connect with our audience and made our journey more meaningful.

  • Define Your Niche: Think about what excites you. Are you sharing your travels with a pet (like Zenna)? Is it about sustainable travel, van life, or hidden gems around Australia? The more focused your niche, the better you can attract a loyal audience.

  • Authenticity is Key: Audiences love to connect with real people. Share your journey, the highs and lows, and the behind-the-scenes moments that make your travels truly yours.

  • Create Engaging Content: Whether through blogs, vlogs, photos, or social media stories, make sure your content resonates with your audience. Share what you know and what you’re passionate about, and they’ll follow along.

2. Build and Grow Your Online Presence

Your content is what will attract people to follow your journey, so you’ll want to start building your presence before hitting the road.

Our Story:
When we first began sharing our travels, our Instagram account was small, and we had no idea how to get noticed. But we made it a point to share consistent, high-quality content, from the picturesque spots to the small details of van life. Little by little, our followers grew. One of our first viral posts was of Zenna exploring a stunning beach in Tasmania, and it helped us gain traction. From there, we learned the importance of storytelling and connecting with our followers on a deeper level.

  • Choose Your Platforms Wisely:

    • Instagram and TikTok are great for short-form content like photos, reels, and stories.

    • YouTube is perfect for vlogs and long-form content.

    • A blog or website (like WordPress or Squarespace) is great for in-depth posts and to share your travel experiences in detail.

  • Consistency is Key: Set a schedule that’s realistic. Posting regularly – whether it’s daily, weekly, or bi-weekly – keeps your audience engaged and eager for more.

  • Engage with Your Audience: Respond to comments, messages, and engage in conversations on your platforms. Building a community around your brand is important to keep your followers loyal.

3. Invest in the Right Gear

Having the right gear for both your travels and content creation can make all the difference. You’ll need tools that are portable, efficient, and give you the flexibility to create anywhere.

Our Story:
In the beginning, we didn’t have the perfect camera setup. We relied heavily on our smartphones for photos and videos, but we quickly learned that better equipment would allow us to produce higher-quality content. We invested in a mirrorless camera and a drone for aerial shots, which changed the game for us. Having reliable, portable gear is essential when you’re always on the move. Plus, capturing Australia’s beautiful landscapes with the right tools made our content stand out.

  • Camera Gear: A quality camera (like a DSLR, mirrorless, or even a smartphone with a great camera) is essential. Make sure it’s versatile and lightweight, as you’ll be traveling a lot.

  • Editing Software: Invest in apps or programs like Adobe Lightroom, VSCO, or Final Cut Pro to edit photos and videos while on the go.

  • Portable Power: Since you’ll be traveling in remote places, having a portable power bank, solar panel charger, or a power station for your van will ensure your devices stay charged.

  • Travel Accessories: Consider getting a drone for aerial shots, a tripod for steady shots, and a microphone for better audio in videos. This equipment can elevate the quality of your content.

4. Monetise Your Content

Becoming a full-time creator means making an income from your content. There are several ways to monetise your travels while on the road.

Our Story:
When we first started, we didn’t have many ways to monetize our content, but we were determined to find a way. Our first income came from a brand partnership with a travel company that found us through Instagram. At the time, we were still building our audience, but we realized that even smaller, niche audiences can attract the right kind of brands. Since then, we’ve used affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, and even started selling van life-related products to help support our travels.

  • Brand Partnerships: Work with brands that align with your values and niche. Look for partnerships that make sense for your lifestyle and audience, whether it’s sponsored posts, product reviews, or affiliate marketing.

  • Affiliate Marketing: Share products you genuinely love and use. Through affiliate links (like Amazon or specific brands), you can earn commissions when your audience purchases through your links.

  • Sell Your Own Products or Services: If you have skills, such as photography, writing, or graphic design, consider selling them through your website or platforms like Etsy. You could also offer online coaching or travel consultations.

5. Stay Organised & Plan Ahead

Traveling full-time and being a content creator requires organisation to balance work and exploration.

Our Story:
In the beginning, we struggled with staying organised while balancing content creation with traveling. We didn’t have a solid system in place, which meant we often missed deadlines or posted less frequently than we should have. Over time, we started using tools like Google Calendar to organise our travel plans, content shoots, and social media posts. This made life on the road much easier and allowed us to focus more on creating rather than scrambling to stay on track.

  • Create a Content Calendar: Plan ahead for the type of content you want to create, when to post, and any upcoming campaigns or collaborations. This will keep you consistent, even on busy days.

  • Use Productivity Tools: Tools like Trello, Notion, or Google Calendar can help you manage your tasks, deadlines, and travel schedule.

  • Budgeting & Expenses: Keep track of your income and expenses. Apps like Expensify or Mint can help you manage your budget on the road.

  • Internet Access & Workspaces: While traveling, you'll need reliable internet. Research co-working spaces, cafes, or libraries in the towns you visit. Many apps, like Workfrom, can help you find these spots.

6. Stay Inspired and Avoid Burnout

As a creator, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the pressure to produce content. Remember to take time for yourself and stay inspired.

Our Story:
There were times on our journey when we felt exhausted—shooting content, managing social media, editing photos, and trying to keep up with brand deadlines was draining. We’ve learned that burnout is real, and it’s okay to take a break. Sometimes, we’ve decided to take a day off to explore a beautiful spot without any pressure to create content. That time to recharge helps us come back with fresh ideas and a renewed passion for our work.

  • Balance Travel & Work: While it’s tempting to capture every moment, take time to unplug, relax, and enjoy the beauty of the places you’re exploring without thinking about content creation.

  • Collaborate with Other Creators: Join online communities of creators, or collaborate with others in the travel or influencer space. It’s inspiring and helps to share ideas and experiences.

  • Keep Learning & Evolving: Follow other content creators, attend online webinars, and stay updated on new trends in digital marketing, photography, and video editing. Growing your skills will help you stay relevant and fresh.

7. Build a Strong Community

Building a strong community is at the heart of long-term success. Your followers want to feel like they’re part of your journey.

Our Story:
One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been building a community of like-minded people. Through our content, we’ve connected with other travelers, van lifers, and pet lovers, and it’s been incredible to see how our followers engage with each other. We’ve received messages from people who’ve been inspired to take their own road trips, and that’s the ultimate reward.

  • Share Personal Stories: People connect with people, not just products or destinations. Share your personal experiences, struggles, and successes along the way.

  • Involve Your Audience: Ask questions, host giveaways, or ask for feedback on your content. This makes your audience feel involved and appreciated.

  • Create a Newsletter: Build a list of followers who want to stay updated on your travels. A newsletter is a great way to keep your audience engaged with exclusive content and news.

Conclusion:

Becoming a full-time creator while traveling Australia is a beautiful and rewarding lifestyle, but it requires dedication, organisation, and creativity. By establishing your brand, consistently producing content, and staying true to yourself, you can turn your travels into an inspiring, income-generating adventure.

Remember, it’s all about balance – between exploring new places, creating amazing content, and nurturing your community. Your journey will inspire others and help them see that with the right mindset, anyone can live the life of a full-time creator on the road.
