Finding a Good Work-Life Balance While on the Road
Introduction

Traveling full-time, living in our 1975 Kombi van with our dog Zenna, has been an incredible adventure for Tia and me. But while the road is full of freedom, the lifestyle of being an influencer also means we’re always juggling the demands of content creation, social media, brand partnerships, and personal life. In many ways, we are our own brand, and this can make it incredibly difficult to switch off and find a true work-life balance.
In this guide, we’ll share how we’ve navigated the challenges of balancing work and life on the road, the importance of setting boundaries, and how you can maintain a healthy and sustainable lifestyle while still thriving as a content creator.
1. Embrace the Reality That You Are Your Brand
Our Story:
When we first started this journey in 2019, we didn’t fully understand how much our personal lives would blend with our brand. As influencers, every photo, video, and post is tied to our identity. Our audience sees our travels, our daily lives, and even our struggles. While this openness creates a deep connection with our followers, it also makes it hard to separate "work" from "life."
For example, we’ve had days where we’ve been on the road, enjoying beautiful sunsets, but we’ve had to stop and take photos or film videos because it’s part of our brand. At the time, it felt like we couldn’t even fully enjoy the moment because it was "work." We quickly realized that being your own brand means that you’re always "on" in some way—whether it’s posting, responding to followers, or planning the next piece of content.
Acknowledge the Blurring Line:
When you become an influencer, your brand and personal life are so intertwined. It can be a challenge to separate the two, but you need to embrace this as part of your journey. It’s okay to have moments where your work and life intersect, but learning how to manage it will help you avoid burnout.Set Boundaries Around Your Personal Time:
One way we manage this is by intentionally setting aside times where we unplug from social media and work. For instance, we’ll designate a few hours each week to focus on our personal lives without any expectation to create content or engage with followers. During these hours, we focus on ourselves—whether it's cooking a nice meal or simply enjoying a hike without worrying about capturing it for content.
2. Prioritise Your Mental Health and Wellbeing
Our Story:
Traveling constantly, always working, and living on the go can take a toll on mental health. We had to learn this the hard way. There was a time when we were so focused on growing our online presence that we didn’t take enough time to rest and recharge. We felt overwhelmed by the constant pressure to produce content, post on social media, and keep up with emails and messages.
It was during one of our more intense travel weeks that we realised we needed to prioritise our mental and emotional health. We started setting limits on how much time we spent on our phones and social media and incorporated more downtime into our routine. We took rest days where we didn’t shoot any content and simply enjoyed the beauty around us without any pressure.
Schedule Rest Days:
Just like you plan your travel days, you should plan for rest. Schedule days when you can focus purely on your well-being. It could be a day spent hiking, meditating, or just resting in the van. During these times, avoid any content creation and allow yourself to fully disconnect.Know When to Step Back:
If you're feeling burned out, it's okay to take a step back. We’ve learned that sometimes the best thing we can do for our business is to take a breather and return with renewed energy and creativity.
3. Establish a Structured Work Routine on the Road
Our Story:
When we first started, we had no solid routine. We’d wake up, drive to the next location, and shoot whatever felt right. But it quickly became clear that without structure, we were missing deadlines, working late into the night, and even losing track of time.
To fix this, we created a routine that balanced travel and work. We started blocking out specific hours of the day for content creation, social media engagement, and admin tasks. For example, mornings were dedicated to shooting and filming, while afternoons were set aside for editing and responding to emails. This structure helped us stay on top of our work while still leaving plenty of time to explore and enjoy our surroundings.
Set Working Hours:
While flexibility is a huge benefit of being a full-time creator, having a set working schedule is essential for maintaining a work-life balance. You could set aside a few hours each day for content creation and set limits on how many hours you’re willing to spend on work.Use Tools to Stay Organized:
We rely heavily on tools like Google Calendar and Trello to keep track of our tasks and deadlines. These tools allow us to plan our content in advance, so we can focus on creating while on the road and ensure we’re meeting our goals.
4. Set Boundaries with Your Audience
Our Story:
As influencers, it's easy to feel like you need to be constantly available for your audience. We’ve had moments where we felt pressured to reply to every comment, every message, and post constantly. While we love engaging with our followers, we learned that setting boundaries is key to maintaining a healthy relationship with our community and with ourselves.
We began scheduling regular times to engage with our audience rather than letting it take over every part of our day. Now, we make it a priority to respond to comments and DMs during specific time slots. This gives us the space to be present with our audience without feeling like we’re always "on."
Designate "Social Media Hours":
Set specific times each day to engage with your followers. Outside of those times, focus on living your life and working on your content. This helps you avoid burnout and stay more present in your personal life.Don't Be Afraid to Set Expectations:
It’s okay to let your followers know that you’re not always available or that you might not respond immediately. Setting clear expectations can help reduce the pressure to constantly be available.
5. Recognise the Value of Downtime and Enjoying the Moment
Our Story:
The best part about living on the road is having the freedom to explore new places, meet people, and immerse ourselves in nature. But in the early days, we didn’t always take the time to simply enjoy our surroundings. We were so focused on content creation that we forgot to slow down and savor the experience.
One moment that stands out was when we visited a quiet beach in Tasmania. Instead of worrying about getting the perfect shot, we spent the day swimming, playing with Zenna, and just being present. That experience reminded us that some of the best moments of travel don’t need to be documented. We learned that the memories we cherish most aren’t always the ones we share online.
Take Time to Experience Life Without a Camera:
Not every moment needs to be captured. Whether it’s a sunrise, a hike, or a quiet evening by the fire, take time to enjoy the moment without worrying about whether it will make good content.Prioritize Your Relationship:
We’ve found that when we travel and work together, it’s easy to forget that we need to nurture our relationship too. We’ve made a point to have "no-work" time where we can just focus on each other and our connection without the pressures of social media or work.
6. Adjust Your Goals and Expectations
Our Story:
When we first started, we had high expectations. We thought we would be able to create a perfect balance from the get-go, managing both work and personal time effortlessly. But the reality of life on the road, combined with the demands of being influencers, was more challenging than we anticipated.
Over time, we’ve had to adjust our expectations. Some days are more focused on work, while others are dedicated to exploration and self-care. We’ve learned that balance isn’t always about perfectly splitting your time; it’s about being flexible and adapting to the ebb and flow of life on the road.
Set Realistic Goals:
Understand that you won’t always be able to maintain a 50/50 split between work and personal time. Some days will require more work, while others will be about relaxing and having fun.Embrace the Imperfection:
Life on the road isn’t perfect, and neither is work-life balance. Embrace the chaos, celebrate the wins, and give yourself grace when things don’t go as planned.
Conclusion:
Finding a good work-life balance as a full-time content creator on the road isn’t easy. Being an influencer means your brand is tied to your personal life, making it difficult to separate work from play. However, with intention, planning, and setting boundaries, it’s possible to create a balance that works for both your professional goals and personal well-being.
For Tia and me, the key has been recognising that we need both structure and flexibility in our lives. By prioritising our mental health, setting clear boundaries with our audience, and taking time to disconnect from work, we’ve been able to enjoy the freedom that comes with travel while still running a successful business.
Remember, balance is a journey, not a destination. With time, you’ll find the rhythm that works best for you—allowing you to live fully on the road while thriving in your work as a content creator.
