Monetise Your Content
Turning Your Passion into Profit
75 VIBES - Tia & Jordy
Northern Territory, Australia
When Tia, Zenna, and I first set out on our travels in our 1975 Kombi van, we didn’t know how we were going to turn our love for exploration and storytelling into a full-time career. But through consistent effort, learning from mistakes, and staying true to our passion, we discovered multiple ways to monetise our content and create a sustainable income on the road. In this guide, I’ll share the key strategies that helped us, including our story of how we built revenue streams while living the dream of van life.
1. Build Your Brand and Audience First
Our Story:
In the beginning, it was all about sharing our experiences and connecting with others who loved the idea of van life. We started our Instagram account and YouTube channel, posting pictures of our journey and snippets of our adventures. At first, we didn’t focus on monetising—our priority was to build a genuine connection with our audience. We learned that the more we shared, the more our followers trusted us. Slowly, we began to see people engage with us on a deeper level.
But the real breakthrough came when we started focusing on building an authentic personal brand. When we embraced the idea that we weren’t just travelers but also storytellers, our audience began to grow faster.
Define Your Niche:
Focus on what makes your journey unique. Are you exploring Australia with your dog like we are? Is your focus on van life, adventure travel, or sustainable living? The more niche your brand, the better you can stand out and attract the right audience.Create Consistent Content:
Consistency is key. For us, posting regularly on Instagram, YouTube, and even starting a blog gave us multiple touchpoints to reach different audiences. Over time, our followers began to rely on us for travel inspiration, van-life tips, and pet-friendly destinations.Engage and Build Community:
The more we interacted with our audience—replying to comments, DMs, and even sharing follower stories—the more they felt connected to our journey. Building a loyal community around your brand makes monetisation much easier later on.
2. Sponsored Posts and Brand Collaborations
Our Story:
It wasn’t long after we started gaining traction on social media that we began receiving offers from brands. At first, we were skeptical—were we ready for sponsored partnerships? Could we balance working with companies while staying authentic to our community? Our first sponsored post was with a travel accessory company, and while we were nervous, it turned out to be a fantastic fit. The brand aligned with our values, and our followers loved the product.
That experience opened the door to more opportunities. We began working with other companies that fit naturally into our lifestyle—outdoor gear brands, eco-friendly products, and van accessories. What we learned from these early collaborations was that staying true to your brand and only working with companies you genuinely believe in is the key to maintaining trust with your audience.
Identify the Right Brands:
Look for partnerships that align with your values and the interests of your audience. For us, we only work with brands that share our commitment to sustainability and van life.Be Transparent with Your Audience:
We made sure to always disclose sponsored posts, ensuring our audience knew that we were partnering with a brand. This transparency built trust with our followers.Negotiate the Right Deals:
Don’t be afraid to negotiate with brands. Your time and content are valuable. Start small, but as you gain more followers, you’ll be able to negotiate higher fees or long-term collaborations.
3. Affiliate Marketing: Earning While You Sleep
Our Story:
One of the most passive forms of monetisation we discovered was affiliate marketing. When we started reviewing products we loved—whether it was a van accessory, camera gear, or even a travel app—Tia and I began sharing affiliate links with our audience. We didn’t expect much at first, but slowly, we started seeing a small income come through. We shared our favorite travel gear and van life essentials with our followers, and whenever someone purchased through our links, we received a commission.
The key for us was being authentic. We only promoted products we truly used and loved, which made our affiliate marketing feel natural and not forced. Over time, affiliate commissions became a reliable source of income that allowed us to continue traveling and creating content without worrying too much about finances.
Promote Products You Use:
Whether it’s the camera gear you use to take stunning photos or the van accessories that make life on the road easier, sharing affiliate links for products you genuinely use can help you earn money passively.Use Multiple Affiliate Networks:
We joined several affiliate programs, from Amazon Associates to smaller, niche brands related to van life. The more affiliate programs you join, the more opportunities you have to earn.Create Engaging Content Around Products:
Rather than just posting a picture of a product, we found success in creating content around it. For example, a video of Zenna enjoying a pet-friendly beach while wearing her favorite harness helped us generate affiliate sales.
4. Create and Sell Your Own Products
Our Story:
As we grew our community, we started to realise that many of our followers wanted something more from us—something that wasn’t just digital content. That’s when we decided to create our own products. We started designing van-life-themed T-shirts, eco-friendly travel accessories, and even digital products like eBooks with travel tips. We launched our online store, and to our surprise, the response was overwhelming. Our followers were excited to support us and get their hands on products that reflected the lifestyle we shared.
Creating your own products can be a great way to monetise your content while offering your audience something tangible that connects with them on a deeper level.
Find Products Your Audience Wants:
Think about what your followers need or want. Do they want travel-themed merchandise, van life essentials, or digital products like guides or photography presets? If you have a loyal community, they’ll be excited to support you.Use Online Marketplaces or Build Your Store:
We started by using platforms like Pinterest and Shopify to sell our products. These platforms made it easy to set up an online store without much technical know-how.Promote Your Products on Your Platforms:
Share your products across your social media channels. We found that showcasing our products in action—whether it was Tia wearing our T-shirts or using our products during a travel day—helped boost sales.
5. Offer Paid Content and Services
Our Story:
As our influence grew, we started offering paid services to our audience. This could be anything from one-on-one travel consultations to photography lessons or even sponsored shoutouts on our Instagram page.
The key here is to diversify. By offering paid content and services, we were able to supplement our passive income and turn our community into a source of direct support.
Offer Personalised Services:
Whether it’s offering one-on-one travel consultations, workshops, or coaching in areas you’re skilled in, personalized services can be a lucrative revenue stream.Turn Your Expertise Into Income:
If you have expertise in photography, writing, or even creating content, you can offer paid tutorials or consulting services. For us, helping others navigate the world of content creation on the road has been both rewarding and profitable.
Conclusion:
Monetising your content while living on the road isn’t easy, but it’s absolutely possible. By diversifying your income streams—through brand collaborations, affiliate marketing, selling your own products, and offering services —you can create a sustainable income that allows you to keep exploring, creating, and living your dream.
Tia and I started this journey with just a love for travel and storytelling. Today, our work allows us to continue living on the road while doing what we love. The key to success is consistency, authenticity, and always being willing to learn and adapt.
Remember, it’s not about getting rich overnight, but rather building something meaningful that supports both your lifestyle and your community. We hope our story helps inspire you to turn your content into income while enjoying the adventure of a lifetime.
