Weather Can Be Unpredictable

  • The weather in the Rockies can change quickly, even during summer. Be prepared for varying temperatures, rain, and snow. Always bring layers, including waterproof gear, and check forecasts before heading out.

Wildlife Safety

  • The Rockies are home to many wild animals, including bears, wolves, and elk. Always stay at least 100 meters away from wildlife, and make noise while hiking to avoid surprising animals. Carry bear spray when hiking in bear country and know how to use it.

Park Passes

  • You'll need a Parks Canada pass to visit Banff, Jasper, and other national parks along the route. These passes can be purchased online or at park gates.

Altitude Considerations

  • Banff and Lake Louise are located at high altitudes, which may affect some visitors. If you're not used to the altitude, take it slow the first day, stay hydrated, and avoid heavy exertion.

Gas Stations Are Sparse

  • Fuel up before leaving towns like Banff or Jasper, as gas stations along the Icefields Parkway are few and far between. Always top up when you get the chance.

Cell Service Is Limited

  • In remote areas like the Icefields Parkway, cell service may be spotty or non-existent. Download maps and itineraries beforehand or bring a GPS device.

Bring Cash for Some Places

  • While most establishments accept cards, some remote hotels, hostels, and attractions might only accept cash or offer limited credit card services. It’s good to have some cash on hand.

Respect the Environment

  • The Rockies are a protected area, so practice Leave No Trace principles. Pack out all your trash, stay on marked trails, and avoid disturbing wildlife.

Outdoor Gear

  • Whether hiking or camping, ensure your gear is suitable for mountain conditions. Sturdy hiking boots, water-resistant clothing, and sun protection are essential, and don’t forget a first aid kit.

Food and Water Availability

  • In smaller towns or remote areas, restaurant hours may be limited, and some places may be closed during off-seasons. It’s always a good idea to carry snacks and extra water for your day’s adventures.

Time Zone

  • The Rocky Mountain region observes Mountain Time. Be mindful of time zone changes when traveling across provinces or regions.

Safety on Mountain Trails

  • Many of the trails in the Rockies can be challenging, so take into account your fitness level and trail difficulty before heading out. Always hike with a buddy, and let someone know your plans before you go.

Sun Protection

  • Even on cloudy days, the higher altitudes and reflections off snow and water can cause sunburns. Always apply sunscreen, wear a hat, and bring sunglasses.

Keep Your Distance from Water

  • Many lakes, including Moraine Lake and Lake Louise, have cold water and can be dangerous for swimming. Always be cautious around water and stay away from the edges.

Night time Driving

  • Driving the Icefields Parkway at night is not recommended due to the winding roads and limited visibility. Try to plan your travel during daylight hours to fully enjoy the scenery and stay safe.
