ГУМ (GUM) in Minsk is not just a shopping destination—it's a true city landmark and a living piece of Belarusian history. Strategically located in the very heart of Minsk on Nezavisimosti Avenue, it opened its doors in 1951 and quickly became the largest and most elegant department store in the country.
The building itself is a stunning monument of Stalinist classicism, created by renowned architects Roman Gegaert and Lev Melegi, and inspired by Italian Renaissance masterpieces. Its symmetrical facade with three grand arches, ornate stucco, crystal chandeliers, wide marble staircases, stained glass, and artful details make GUM look more like a palace or museum than an ordinary store. In fact, it often appears in films and is frequently compared to European galleries for its stately design.
GUM has evolved with the times but still carefully preserves its original atmosphere. The spacious halls feature local brands, and you’ll find goods for every taste: fashion, homeware, souvenirs, toys, cosmetics, and much more.
Tourist tips:
Look up and admire the grand ceiling and vintage showcases—they haven’t changed much since the 1950s.
This is a great place to shop for high-quality Belarusian souvenirs, traditional textiles, and designer ceramics.
GUM is open daily and easy to reach by metro (October Square, Kupalovskaya, or Lenin Square stations).
For a lunch or coffee break, try the cozy cafe or the classic Soviet-style canteen on the upper floor.
