When to Visit Madeira

Peak Season

June to September means sunshine, festivals, and high energy. But also bigger crowds, higher prices, and limited parking. If you love the buzz and book ahead, this is your time.

Off-Season

The rest of the year offers peaceful trails, better prices, and fewer people. Rain is more likely, but so is a quieter, more authentic experience. Ideal for hikers, explorers, and anyone looking to unwind.

January to March: A Rainy Respite

From January to the end of March, Madeira experiences its rainiest period. While this brings lush landscapes and dramatic waterfalls, it can also mean days spent dodging showers. Temperatures stay mild (18–21°C along the coast), but evenings and higher-altitude areas can be much cooler.

April to June: Spring Awakenings

Rainfall eases and days grow longer, making this a great time for hiking and levadas without summer heat or crowds. With daytime temperatures in the low twenties and pleasant evenings, this is a favourite for travellers who prefer nature and calm.

Mid-June to September: Sun, Sea, and Crowds

This is the warmest and driest season (26–27°C), perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying Madeira’s coastal spots. But it's also the most crowded time, and popular trails and viewpoints get busy. Hikers seeking solitude might find this season less relaxing.

October and November: Autumn Ambience

Expect occasional rain mixed with sunny spells and comfortable temperatures (20–24°C). A lovely time to visit if you don’t mind unpredictable weather and want to avoid the crowds.

December: A Festive Warm-Up

Madeira lights up for Christmas and New Year, with a festive atmosphere and milder weather than mainland Europe. Evenings are cooler, but it’s a popular time for winter sun seekers and holiday celebrations.

Our Recommendation

If you’re after fewer tourists and cooler weather, winter, spring, or late autumn are great choices. For swimming and sunshine, go in summer. But for a balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds, late April to November is your sweet spot.

A Year-Round Destination

No matter the season, Madeira offers something special. Coastal temperatures range from 20–21°C in winter to 26–27°C in summer. Just pack layers if you’re heading into the mountains — even paradise gets chilly up there.
