Grand Teton National Park Moose, Wyoming

There is a moment driving north from Jackson on Highway 89 when the Teton Range simply appears — no foothills, no gradual buildup, just a wall of jagged granite rising abruptly 7,000 feet straight out of the flat valley floor. It's one of the most dramatic mountain reveals in North America, and it happens fast. Grand Teton is a compact park compared to its neighbor Yellowstone, but what it lacks in size it more than compensates for in sheer visual impact. Pristine alpine lakes, abundant wildlife, world-class hiking, and that impossible skyline make it one of the great national parks on the continent.

Cost $35 per vehicle, valid for 7 days. Motorcycles $30, individuals on foot or bike $20. America the Beautiful Pass accepted. No timed entry required. Note: as of 2026, international visitors face an additional $100 per-person surcharge.

Best Times to Visit Mid-June through September is peak season with full access to all facilities, trails, and services. July and August are the busiest months — arrive before 8 AM at popular spots like Jenny Lake and Schwabacher Landing or you'll battle crowds and parking. September is arguably the best month — fewer visitors, elk rut beginning, aspens turning gold, and the Tetons reflecting in still water. Winter closes many roads but offers exceptional snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Cell Service Spotty and variable. Reliable signal in developed areas like Jenny Lake, Colter Bay, Signal Mountain Lodge, and the Jackson Hole valley corridor. Expect gaps everywhere else. Download the NPS app and offline maps before entering.

Gas & Food Gas is available at Signal Mountain Lodge and Colter Bay Village inside the park — convenient but expect higher prices than in Jackson. Signal Mountain Lodge also has a general store with groceries and grab-and-go food. Restaurants operate seasonally inside the park at Jackson Lake Lodge, Signal Mountain Lodge, and Colter Bay Village. The town of Jackson, just south of the park, has a full restaurant scene ranging from casual to excellent. Dornan's in Moose — a private enclave sitting inside park boundaries — has a pizza place and wine shop with stunning Teton views.

Lodging Grand Teton has genuinely great in-park lodging. Jenny Lake Lodge is the most intimate and luxurious. Jackson Lake Lodge is a historic landmark with a massive lobby window framing the Tetons. Signal Mountain Lodge and Colter Bay Village offer more accessible price points with cabins. All book out many months in advance for summer — start looking 12 months ahead if you want in-park options. The town of Jackson has extensive hotels at every price point, though summer rates are steep.

Don't Miss The Teton Park Road drive is the essential experience — pull over constantly. Schwabacher Landing on the Snake River is one of the most photographed sunrise spots in the West, with the Tetons reflecting perfectly in still beaver ponds. Jenny Lake is the hub for hiking, with boat shuttles across the lake cutting miles off the approach to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. Wildlife here is exceptional — bison, moose, black and grizzly bears, pronghorn, and elk are all regular sightings. Keep 100 yards from bears and wolves, 25 yards from everything else.
