Not all roads are self drivable, even if you have a 4X4 rental car.
Some of Kyrgyzstan’s most breathtaking destinations—like Altyn Arashan and parts of the Karakol Valley—are only accessible via rough, unmaintained roads that standard vehicles can’t handle. To reach these spots, you’ll often need to hire Soviet-era military vehicles, such as UAZ jeeps or similar rugged 4x4s.
💰 Cost: Expect to pay around 8,000 KGS (about $90 USD) each way. These vehicles typically fit four passengers, so splitting the cost with other travelers makes it much more affordable.
🛻 Pro tip: Trekking agencies in Karakol can help organize these rides. Try to book in advance during peak season, as demand can be high (I didn't and it was fine).
