The Eternal Flame honors the Panfilov’s Twenty-Eight Guardsmen who died defending Moscow during World War II. The large monument is located inside the park and is hard to miss.

Even if you’re not a big history person, it’s worth stopping by — the atmosphere is powerful and reflective, and it offers insight into the country’s past and collective memory.

If you’re traveling in May and happen to be in Almaty on May 9, this place becomes especially meaningful. There is a commemorative parade where people walk through the park carrying photos of their grandfathers and relatives who died during the war. It’s a moving, deeply local experience and a rare chance to witness how history is remembered here.
