Right in the heart of Panfilov Park, you’ll find the Ascension Cathedral, a place that feels like it’s been lifted straight out of a fairytale. It has survived several major earthquakes, which makes it even more impressive.

Visitors of any religion are welcome, just be respectful of the rules. Women are asked to cover their heads, and scarves are usually provided at the entrance. The inside is stunning, and the area around the cathedral is a lovely spot to feed pigeons and slow down for a bit.

One quick myth to clear up: despite what you might hear, the cathedral was not built without nails. Metal fasteners and brackets were used, just in a smart, unconventional way.
