One of my favorite spots in Almaty, any season. In winter it's the highest mountain ice rink in Central Asia: smooth ice, fresh mountain air, and the kind of setting that feels almost too good to be real. Opens November–December, closes March–April depending on weather. Skate rental available on site, entry starts from around $1–6 USD depending on age. Go on a sunny morning for the best light and fewer people.

In summer, come for the views, the fresh air, and the famous Stairs of Health: 842 steps leading up from Medeo toward Shymbulak. Locals climb them for exercise, tourists do it for the views. It's a workout but the mountain scenery at the top makes it worth every step.

Year-round tips: prices at the cafés nearby are 2–3x higher than in the city so bring your own snacks or tea. Dress in layers — it's always cooler up here than in the city, and in winter bring gloves, a hat, and sunglasses because the sun on the ice is blinding. Easy to get to by bus or taxi.
