Faroe Islands

The faroe islands is a small country but even though it is quite wide and the roads are narrows but in a very good state. As it is an archipelago, you need to switch from an island to another. The easiest way to do so is by renting a car.

There are a lot of rental agencies directly at the airport and you can book online and pick up your ride when you arrive. Even if you arrive in the middle of the night, there will be someone to give you the keys. I booked my with Economy bookings and it turned out to be the cheapest option with the best coverage.

There is no real need of an off road car for wandering around. I had a small car and it was enough and comfortable for this trip and also cheaper. I even got an upgrade and had some cool options such as heated seats or a heated steering wheel.

There are other means of transportations on the archipelago: buses and ferries. They can be a good alternative solution if you choose not to rent a car.

The last transportation mean is the Helicopter. Atlantic airways has severals in its fleet that are used between some of the most isolated islands of the archipelago. There are a lot of routes and it is possible to use it as a tourist, but there are some tricks.

First: the price. A ticket for a tourist is pricier than a ticket for a local, even if it is cheap for a helicopter ride, it is around 60€ per person (the price vary according to the route you take). Second: as a tourist, you can’t book a roundtrip, you will have to make sure you have a backup plan for the way back home (buses or ferries for example). Most of the routes have a scenic ride but make sure to check the Atlantic airways website for the full timetable and prices.
