Family Travel Tips

If I had kids, these are some things I would keep in mind!

🏔️ Plan for the Altitude

Breckenridge sits at 9,600+ feet. Kids can feel altitude effects faster than adults.

  • Hydrate constantly

  • Take it easy on arrival day

  • Prioritize good sleep the first night

  • Limit sugary drinks and heavy meals on your first evening

If possible, spend your first night in Denver before heading up.

🏔️ Book Ski School Early

Breckenridge Ski Resort has children’s ski and snowboard programs, but they fill up fast during holidays and weekends.

  • Reserve lessons weeks in advance

  • Morning lessons tend to have better snow conditions

  • Label all gear clearly

  • Pack extra gloves!

🏔️ Mix Ski Days with Fun Activities

Avoid burnout by balancing ski days with other winter fun:

  • Sledding at Carter Park (free and great views - I included this as a spot in the guide!)

  • Tubing at Frisco Adventure Park

  • Ice skating at Stephen C. West Ice Arena

  • Snowshoeing on easy trails

  • Visiting the Breckenridge Troll (Isak Heartstone)

🏔️ Choose Lodging Strategically

Look for:

  • Ski-in/ski-out access (Gravity Haus is great for this and the next tip)

  • Walkable access to Main Street

  • Full kitchens (to avoid dining out every meal)

  • In-unit washer/dryer (if this isn’t available, I included a laundromat recommendation in the guide)

  • Shuttle access to lifts

Staying near Peak 9 is often best for beginners and ski school access.

🏔️ Make Dining Easy

Winter weekends are busy, so I recommend making reservations

Family-friendly dining tips:

  • Eat early (5:00–6:00 pm)

  • Make reservations in advance

  • Pack snacks for lift lines

🏔️ Pack Smart for Kids

Mountain weather changes quickly.

Must-haves:

  • Waterproof gloves (bring 2 pairs per child)

  • Hand and toe warmers

  • Neck gaiters

  • High-SPF sunscreen

  • Lip balm (with SPF would be great!!)

  • Snow boots with good traction

  • base layer + mid layer + waterproof outer layer.

🏔️ Plan Transportation Ahead

  • AWD or 4WD vehicles are strongly recommended in winter.

  • Parking can be limited near lifts (F lot or the Gondola lot are great)

  • The town offers a free shuttle system, which is helpful if you don’t want to drive daily.

🏔️ Make It Magical

Breckenridge feels like a snow globe in winter.

Don’t miss:

  • Festive lights on Main Street

  • Snow sculpture displays (January)

  • Holiday torchlight ski runs

  • S’mores and hot cocoa nights
