Jasper & Banff National Parks, Canada

  • Best Time to Visit: Summer!

Summer is peak season so it does get pretty busy, so I recommend visiting in September before things start to close in October. Don't write-off visiting during the winter, though. From alpine lake ice skating, snowboarding, snowshoeing, & more. These parks are just as beautiful & adventurous.

  • Buy a Parks Canada Pass: You will need a park pass for the duration of your time in Jasper & Banff, even when driving between the two parks.
A day pass is around $11 CAD per adult, or you can get a Discovery Pass for unlimited access to all parks for $72 CAD per year.

  • Camping & Accommodation: There are plenty of sites that offer same-day bookings but during peak season, it could be difficult to get a spot. When I went in early October I was able to get spots the same day. Otherwise, I recommend booking your campsites or other accommodations ahead of your visit during the summer months.

  • Start Early for Popular Trails: Trails like Lake Agnes, Moraine Lake, or Lake Louise fill quickly. Arrive early in the morning to secure parking, enjoy peaceful scenery, & avoid crowds.

  • Plan for Weather Changes: The Rockies can be unpredictable. Even in summer, mornings & evenings can be chilly. Layer your clothing, bring rain gear, & wear sturdy shoes.

  • Use Shuttle Services: During peak season, parks offer shuttles to Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, & other spots. This saves parking headaches, reduces traffic, & helps protect the environment.

  • Look for Events & Festivals ahead of time! These are great opportunities to get involved with local community & culture. Jasper has a notable Under Dark Sky festival!
