Getting There & Transportation

I live in a van, so transportation is usually not something I need to heavily coordinate. But not everyone lives in a van & I have had people who needed to coordinate meeting me in Breckenridge from Denver. My personal favorite driving route is from Colorado Springs because the drive is much much easier, less traffic, and the pass is not as steep as driving from Denver. However, the most frequented route is from Denver along I70.

Getting There & Transportation in Breckenridge

Getting to Breckenridge is pretty straightforward, but winter mountain travel requires a little planning.

Flying In

Most people fly into: Denver International Airport (DEN)

• About 100 miles from Breckenridge

• Typical drive time: 1.5–2 hours (can be longer in winter or weekend traffic)

Alternative (smaller) airport:

• Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE): Closer to Vail (~1–1.5 hours to Breckenridge), but with fewer flight options and more pricey. 

Driving from Denver

The drive follows I-70 West, which is a scenic but heavily traveled route with frequent accidents & delays. 

Important Winter Driving Tips:

• AWD or 4WD is highly recommended

• Colorado traction laws are enforced during storms

• Expect weekend ski traffic (especially Friday evenings & Sunday afternoons)

• Check road conditions via COTrip before departure

• Leave early in the morning to avoid congestion

• If arriving late, consider spending your first night in Denver to avoid nighttime mountain driving and help with altitude acclimation.

Shuttle & Private Transfers

If you prefer not to drive (this is a stress-free option during snowstorms or peak traffic days):

• Shared airport shuttles run regularly between DEN and Breckenridge.

• Private SUV or luxury transfers are available.

• Epic Mountain Express: Frequent shuttles from the airport to Breckenridge (and other resorts) during winter. Shared rides drop at a central transfer area or can be booked door-to-door for slightly higher fares. 

• Summit Express: Scheduled shuttles with multiple daily departures from DEN to Breckenridge; rates typically start around $54–$89 per person, depending on drop-off type (transfer center or door-to-door). 

• Peak 1 Express (Mountain Shuttle): A local favorite with a range of shuttle times and reliable service from DIA to Breckenridge and other ski towns; shared and private options available (often starting around $44–$69+). 

• Summit Concierge Shuttle: Hourly shared shuttle service from Denver Airport with pricing depending on group size; cheaper per person when more passengers ride together. 

• Many services offer door-to-door drop-off at your lodging.

Getting Around Town

Breckenridge is compact and very walkable, especially near Main Street and Peak 9.

Free Transportation Options:

• The Breckenridge Free Ride bus system connects neighborhoods, ski bases, and Main Street.

• Summit Stage (free county-wide bus) connects to nearby towns like Frisco and Silverthorne.

• If staying near the lifts, you may not need a car at all.

Parking Tips

• Overnight street parking is restricted in winter.

• Use designated parking lots and garages.

• Arrive early for ski-area parking during peak season.

Walkability

Downtown Breckenridge is extremely pedestrian-friendly:

• Restaurants, shops, and après spots are within a few blocks.

• Sidewalks are maintained, but snow boots with traction are recommended (I slip a lot)
