❄️Signature Winter Events in Breckenridge❄️

Breckenridge isn’t just about snowboarding & skiing. Winter here is packed with unique festivals and mountain traditions that make a trip feel truly special. Some of my favorite annual winter events are here!

Ullr Fest (Typically in December)

Ullr Fest is Breckenridge’s Norse-inspired winter celebration honoring Ullr,  the mythical Scandinavian god of snow. This is also where they compete for the world record for Longest Shotski!

What to Expect:

  • Viking costumes and themed events

  • Main Street parade

  • The iconic “shot ski” attempt (hundreds of people taking a shot simultaneously on long skis, typically the whiskey is from the Breckenridge Distillery & it is delicious!)

  • Bonfires, live music, and street festivities

  • Family-friendly activities & late-night celebrations

  • I recommend swinging by RMU for drinks & music!

Ullr Fest draws large crowds and can sell out lodging quickly. Book accommodations early and expect a high-energy party atmosphere throughout town. If you want to participate in the shotski, you’ll want to book this ASAP because it sells out!

International Snow Sculpture Championships (Typically in January)

One of the coolest (get it?) winter events in the country, this annual competition brings world-class teams to Breckenridge to hand-carve massive snow sculptures.

What Makes It Special:

  • 12-foot-tall blocks of snow

  • No power tools allowed, only hand tools

  • Artists work for nearly a week to make them!

  • Free public viewing

The sculptures are displayed outdoors in town (typically near the Riverwalk Center area) and illuminated at night.

Torchlight Ski Runs (Holiday & Special Events)

Torchlight runs are one of Breckenridge’s best winter traditions.

What Happens:

After dark, ski instructors descend the mountain in a glowing line carrying flares or LED torches, creating a dramatic “river of light” effect. Some events end with fireworks!

Torchlight runs typically happen:

  • Around Christmas and New Year’s

  • During holiday weeks

  • Special events

They’re visible from the base areas of Breckenridge Ski Resort.

Why Include These in Your Trip?

  • Add variety beyond skiing

  • Offer photo opportunities

  • Experience the true mountain-town spirit of Breckenridge
