Welcome to Italy’s most enigmatic garden, a place where stone comes to life and logic vanishes amidst the mossy woods.
Created in the 16th century by Prince Vicino Orsini "merely to set the heart free" after the death of his beloved wife, this park is far from your typical Italian garden. It is an "initiation path" populated by mythological creatures and impossible architectures, carved directly into massive blocks of volcanic tuff (peperino). Here, Renaissance art abandons harmony to embrace the grotesque, the magical, and the surreal.
What to Explore Inside
The Ogre (The Mouth of Hell): The park’s most iconic image. A colossal, monstrous face with jaws wide open. Step inside: the cave's shape distorts voices, turning whispers into echoes. Carved upon the monster's lips, you will find the warning: "Every thought flies."
The Leaning House: Prepare to doubt your own senses. This small stone house was built on a tilted boulder. Stepping inside causes an immediate loss of balance and a sense of vertigo. It is a physical and mental challenge that fascinates both adults and children.
Proteus and Glaucus: A gigantic marine mask with a gaping mouth rising from the earth itself, symbolizing the eternal transformation of nature.
The Elephant and the Dragon: Majestic sculptures depicting raw power and the primordial struggle between good and evil.
The Tempietto (Little Temple): Located at the highest point of the park, this elegant and classical building represents the final destination—a place of peace and memory dedicated to the Prince's wife, Giulia Farnese.
