Viterbo is known as the "City of the Popes," and this palace is its crown jewel. Built in the 13th century when the Papacy fled the dangers of Rome, it features a stunning loggia with intricate Gothic arches.

This site is world-famous for hosting the longest papal election in history. Fed up with the delay, the local citizens locked the cardinals inside and removed the roof to force a decision—giving birth to the very concept of the "Conclave" (cum clave, meaning "with a key").
