The Kenai Peninsula, locally known as 'Alaska's Playground', is where even Alaska's residents go for fun! Given its unique culture and natural environment, here are 5 tips on how to make the most out of your visit!
The entire Kenai Peninsula is very seasonal
The Kenai Peninsula is world known for its salmon fishing and summer outdoor recreation. Although this are offers fun all year around it is important to note that a lot of the 'touristy' attractions will close. What do I mean? - some roads, like to Exit glacier is closed after the beginning of October, many shops close, and most eco tours/guides take the winter off. Winter is still a great time to visit but keep your desires for visiting the Kenai Peninsula
Summer gets BUSY & the best deals fill up fast
You'll definitely want to plan your trip a couple months in advanced. The area goes from zero to 100 very quickly and if ill prepared could leave you in a jam with lodging. There are INCREDIBLE rentals all throughout the peninsula with views & great amenities that don't break the bank.
An RV might not be the best method
We see it every year - flocks of RV's driving down from Anchorage on their way to the Kenai Peninsula. It seems like a great way to experience Alaska because your lodging is RIGHT there with you. Unfortunately, spaces for those RV's are limited. Many trailheads can't accommodate an RV & parking in the towns are very limited due to its size. Finding a great place to park for the night is also challenging resulting in many using the local grocery stores instead.
The Rainiest months are actually July & August
The busiest months and the rainiest are July and August. If you're visiting I suggest checking the forecast before packing - usually these months are about 60 degrees (f) and raining. So pack a good rain jacket and your Xtratuf boots!
The bugs really are THAT bad
We don't lie when we call the mosquito our 'State Bird' - and unfortunately those aren't our only worry. Other insects such as 'no-see-ums' and 'white socks' also become a pain. I spray my gear down with permethrin, avoid dark colors, and skip the legging (mosquitos can get you through them).
The Kenai Peninsula is a wonderful area to visit on your Alaskan vacation. Hopefully these tips help make your time here a bit more incredible.
