Castle Leod is a charming historic castle located in the Scottish Highlands, near Strathpeffer.

Castle Leod has been home to the Cromartie Mackenzies for over 500 years and is the seat of Clan Mackenzie. The castle was granted to John of Killin, 10th Chief of Clan MacKenzie (1485-1561) after he fought at the Battle of Flodden.

Although the site of Castle Leod is believed to have connections to an earlier Pictish fort, the present castle is the result of work carried out in the early 17th century by Sir Roderick Mackenzie.

The castle and family have been at the epicentre of Highland and Scottish politics, heavily involved in the Jacobite Rising of 1745, which resulted in the temporary forfeiture of their estate. Other adventures taken by the family have resulted in sentences of death for high treason, clan warfare, as well as going from near poverty to the heights of power.

Today the castle remains the home of the Earl of Cromartie, Chief of Clan Mackenzie and is open to the public on a limited number of days.
