The Geothermal Exhibition is located inside Hellisheiði Power Plant, Iceland’s largest geothermal power station, owned and operated by ON Power. The plant produces both electricity and hot water for the Reykjavík area, showcasing how Iceland harnesses its natural geothermal energy. Together with other plants around the country, geothermal energy provides about 30 percent of Iceland’s electricity and nearly 90 percent of its heating.
A visit to the exhibition gives travelers a rare opportunity to see inside an active power plant and learn how energy is drawn from deep within the earth. Interactive displays explain Iceland’s volcanic geology, the process of geothermal production, and its impact on the country’s sustainability. One highlight is the Carbfix project, where carbon dioxide is permanently stored by turning it into stone underground.
Visitors can also explore exhibits on Iceland’s geothermal history, geology, and culture, as well as a display of Icelandic rocks and minerals. The Curiosity Corner is a fun space where guests of all ages can explore geothermal energy in an engaging way.
