A hidden gem inside Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

Mögárfoss is a striking 35-meter waterfall flowing down the western wall of the famous Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon in South Iceland. Its smooth, sliding shape over an iron-rich rock face gives it a unique look, much like the nearby Systrafoss waterfall in Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Location and access

The waterfall is found within Fjaðrárgljúfur, one of Iceland’s most photographed canyons. From the parking area, the walking path is about two kilometers round trip and fairly easy, though the trail can get muddy after rain. Good shoes with grip are a must. The route offers several safe viewpoints where you can take in the canyon’s dramatic curves and the waterfall from above.

What makes it special

Mögárfoss is less known than the main canyon itself, but it’s one of the prettiest features hidden inside. The waterfall slides gracefully down reddish rock, making it especially photogenic in soft light. The contrast between the green moss and rust-colored rock gives it a truly unique appearance.

Travel tips

There’s a paid parking area at the canyon entrance, and restrooms are available, though not the most pleasant. The walk to Mögárfoss is perfect if you want to escape the crowds and experience a quieter corner of this famous site. Bring water, take your time at the viewpoints, and enjoy the peaceful sound of the canyon river below.
