Sougia is built on the ruins of ancient Syia, once part of the historic city of Elyros. Nearby, you'll find the remains of the Dorian city of Lissos, which flourished during the Roman and Byzantine periods. In the village itself, you can visit two charming small churches: the Church of the Holy Mother and the Church of Agios Kyrikos.
Sougia is accessible by sea, with a quaint little harbor, but you can also reach it by car via the villages of Alikianos and Agia Irini. The harbor, located to the west of the village, is dotted with colorful fishing boats and adds to the local charm.
This peaceful village is known for its welcoming atmosphere, with a handful of lovely tavernas, cafés, and bars where you can unwind. The beach here is made up of large, dark grey pebbles, and the seawater is remarkably clean.
Sougia's harbor also serves as a transport link to several destinations along the southern coast of Crete, including Paleochora, Agia Roumeli (the exit of the Samaria Gorge), Loutro, Chora Sfakion, and even the island of Gavdos.
