Agia Galini is a charming seaside village on the southern coast of Crete. The name "Agia Galini" translates to “Holy Tranquility” or “Holy Serenity” in Greek, reflecting the peaceful atmosphere and calm sea that characterizes the area. The village is known for its pebbly beaches, picturesque harbor and coastal path along the rocks, lovely little tavernas and traditional village charm. In the center you'll find a couple of narrow streets with steep steps filled with shops and tavernas.

Before the 1960s and 1970s, Agia Galini was a small fishing village, primarily serving the nearby village of Melabes. However, during the 1960s, it became a popular destination for hippies, who were drawn to the area’s liberated and serene environment. Many of these visitors have returned year after year, and the village still retains its appeal to this day.

Today, Agia Galini is a village with a traditional character, offering a range of amenities. The village has many options for accommodation, tavernas, entertainment, and services such as medical facilities, post offices, banks, and shops. The village is built on the slopes of a high mountain, near the mouth of the Platys River (also called Amarianos), which flows year-round. The houses of the village overlook the vast Messara Bay and the South Cretan Sea. In the harbor you'll see a lot of colorful fishing boats. During high season it might get a bit crowded.

Trips can be booked through local companies at the harbor.

Parking is available at the harbor: https://maps.app.goo.gl/BrrTKBYv7rF3UGAQ9
