The hike from Sougia to Ancient Lissos and its hidden beach is one of Crete’s most rewarding short treks – combining dramatic landscapes, archaeological wonders, and peaceful swimming in a single half-day adventure.
Starting in the relaxed seaside village of Sougia, the trail leads inland through the Lissos Gorge, a narrow, scenic ravine lined with wild herbs, carob trees, and towering rock walls. The path is well-marked and takes around 60–75 minutes at a gentle pace.
Once you arrive, the atmosphere shifts: the ruins of Ancient Lissos are scattered across the valley floor, nestled between low hills and olive trees. This was once a prosperous coastal town during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, known especially for its Asklepieion – a healing sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius, still featuring intact mosaic floors. You’ll also find Roman tombs, cisterns, and a small restored chapel.
Just beyond the ruins lies Lissos Beach – quiet, pebbly, and beautifully remote. The turquoise water is perfect for swimming, and the bay is often empty, aside from the occasional boat or fellow hiker. Bring your swimwear, water, and a snack, and enjoy a peaceful break before hiking back or catching a boat.
