Matala is known for its ancient caves that were once used as living spaces. In the 1960s, it became a hangout spot for hippies until they were kicked out by the church and military. Now, Matala is a popular destination with gift shops and bars, celebrating its hippie history during the annual Matala Beach Festival. The village offers a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. The wonderful sandy beach of Matala is lined with tavernas, colorful cafés, traditional villas, the famous VW Beetle, bookshops...and not to forget-the streetpaintings!

The beach is well organised with everything you need like sunbeds, umbrellas, life-guards, bars, restaurants etc. Tamarisk trees offers shade on the beach. The atmosphere is relaxed, a great place to experience a different vibe.

You can climb the caves and go inside: the view you have from the cave of the beach, the sea and historic fishing village is amazing and well worth for taking out your camera.

South of Matala you'll find the beach Kokkini Ammos (red beach), it's a fine grey sandy beach that can only be reached by a steep narrow footpath.
