On a hot and humid Japanese summer’s day, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be
than Atera Valley. Extending a good 6.2km, this river is home to some of the clearest and most pristine water you’ll find in Japan.
It’s said that due to the content of rocks in the river, the water will always be crystal clear and bright blue, even after a heavy storm. There are multiple sights to visit along the way, even if you don’t plan on taking a dip, but if you do, get ready for the most refreshing swim of your life!
Starting at the bridge and walking up the valley, there are a number of good spots to
stop and take it all in. My favorite would have to be Kumaga Fuchi (Bear Pool). There are plenty of rocks to jump from, the water is deep and blue and it’s not too difficult to get out once you’re done. Truly one of the most breathtaking valleys in Japan.
Getting there
If you’re traveling by car, feel free to drive up the valley road and stop anywhere, making sure there’s enough space for other cars to pass by. If you don’t mind walking the whole way, there’s a car park at the mouth of the valley.
If you’re getting here by public transport, catch the train to Nojiri Station and walk 20 mins to the valley entrance.
In the month of August, cars are not permitted; however you can catch a bus (leaving every 30 mins) to take you to the top of the valley. Slowly follow the river down on foot (6.2km downhill), or catch the shuttle bus back again.
