How safe is Colombia

Colombia

A question I get many times is: How safe is Colombia? Let me start by saying that you always have to look for official travel advice in your own country. Especially because I noticed that many countries give different recommendations about what areas are safe to visit and what not, meaning you will look at maps and see different parts being yellow, orange and red. It is important to always follow the recommendations of your country and make sure your insurance covers your travels.

I can say that Colombia has made tremendous progress in security in recent years and many places are totally safe to visit. I have visited Colombia more than twenty times and only have had positive experiences. However, the country is still facing a lot of challenges and it is important to always be careful, especially in big cities and remote or less touristy areas.

Before your trip, but also upon arrival, always be well informed about local safety before you set off. Take as few valuables as possible with you when you go out, do not walk through suburbs alone and travel as little as possible in the evening or take a taxi.

Overall, Colombia is safe for visitors as long as you inform yourself, take precautions and travel consciously.
