We’ve been photographing the Canadian Rockies for years and it truly never gets old. With our majestic mountains and tuquoise lakes, this region is a paradise for photographers.

While our camera bag has definitely grown bigger over the years, you can absolutely capture stunning photos with just your phone too. There’s no shortage of inspiration here!

No matter what you shoot with, a few key tips can help elevate your photos:

1. Sunrises, sunsets and golden hours are your best friends

The soft light you get early or late in the day makes all the difference. Yes, it can be painful to wake up for sunrise - especially in the summer when the days are long - but if you want to elevate your photos, this is probably the best tip we can give.

2. Find reflections

Still lakes and calm rivers offer mirror-like reflections of mountains and skies. Once again, this typically happens early or late in the day when the wind dies and the water is calm.

3. Use natural frames

Finding something that you can frame your photo with adds depth to your shot. Look for branches, rock formations or flowers to frame your photo naturally.

4. Use leading lines

Leading lines add structure to your composition and help guide the viewer’s eye towards your subject. It can be a trail, road, ridgeline etc.

5. Be patient and play with compositions

Sometimes it takes a while to get the right composition or light. Try different angles, get low to the ground, or change your focal point (you can do that on your phone too by switching between lenses (like 2x or 5x).

6. Respect nature

Make sure to always stay on marked trails, don’t disturb wildlife, and always leave no trace. A beautiful shot should never come at nature’s expense!
