Patsos Gorge is a lush, shaded gorge hidden in the heart of the Amari region, offering a refreshing contrast to Crete’s dry summer landscapes. Flowing water, plane trees, rock walls, and small waterfalls create a cool, almost mystical atmosphere, while the chapel of Agios Antonios, set inside a cave, adds a quiet spiritual presence at the entrance. The whole route to the end and back is around 3 hours and there are points where you need to use some steady ropes and ladders. Nothing very difficult but you have to keep it in mind.
This is a gorge that feels intimate and gentle, perfect for slow walking, nature lovers, and families looking for an easy yet rewarding nature experience.
Local tip ⭐: Walk slowly and take time near the stream and cave chapel; after the hike, stop at a nearby traditional taverna for local dishes — this area is known for honest, home-style food.
Eco note 🌿
Patsos Gorge is a sensitive freshwater ecosystem — stay on paths, don’t disturb the water or vegetation, take all rubbish with you, and respect the cave chapel as both a natural and sacred space.
