Kourtaliotiko Gorge is one of Crete’s most powerful and dramatic natural passages, carved deep between towering rock walls by wind, water, and time. Famous for the sound of the air rushing through the cliffs — the kourtala — and for its waterfalls and river flowing toward Preveli, it feels alive, intense, and deeply elemental.
This is not a quiet stroll but a full sensory experience — rushing water, echoes, vertical cliffs, and the constant movement of nature guiding everything toward the Libyan Sea.
You can also have the opportunity to do Canyoning in the water. ( cf link below)
Local tip ⭐: Walk down the stone steps to the river and waterfalls, but wear proper shoes and check conditions — after rain, the gorge becomes especially powerful and slippery.
Eco note 🌿
Kourtaliotiko is a fragile gorge ecosystem — stay on marked paths, respect warning signs, avoid entering the river during strong flow, and take all rubbish with you to protect this vital natural corridor.
