Zakros Gorge, also known as the Gorge of the Dead, is one of Crete’s most atmospheric and historic gorges. Stretching from Ano Zakros to Kato Zakros, it winds through dramatic rock walls, caves once used as ancient burial sites, and a dry riverbed that leads all the way to the Libyan Sea.

Wild yet welcoming, this gorge blends nature, archaeology, and landscape in a way that feels uniquely eastern Crete. Walking it is like moving through layers of time — from Minoan history to raw, untouched nature.

Local tip ⭐: Walk downhill from Ano Zakros to Kato Zakros, then reward yourself with a swim and fresh fish by the sea. Spring and autumn offer the best light and temperatures.

Eco note 🌿
Zakros Gorge is both a natural and archaeological corridor — stay on the marked path, don’t enter caves, leave all stones untouched, and carry out everything you bring in to protect this rare landscape.
