Discover the legendary Matala beach, a beautiful sandy cove where history and a free-spirited vibe live on. Spend your day swimming in the clear waters of the Libyan Sea or exploring the famous sandstone cliffs, riddled with caves that were once Roman tombs and later, a haven for hippies in the '60s and '70s. The beach is just steps from the car park, making it easy to settle in, grab a drink from a seaside taverna, and soak up one of the best sunsets in Crete.

Local tip ⭐
Stay for sunset, when the cliffs glow and the beach quiets down after the day crowds. A short walk in the village after swimming completes the experience.

Eco note 🌿
The caves are protected archaeological sites. Do not enter or climb them, avoid littering, and help preserve Matala’s unique landscape so its spirit remains alive for future generations.
