Areas in Bali Explained

My honest opinion on where you should spend your holiday

Bali, Indonesia

Denpasar

This is the capital city of Bali, located close to Kuta. It is where most travelers arrive, and you will find large shopping malls and busy city life. However, this is not a holiday destination I would recommend. It is very urban, chaotic, and not visually beautiful. It may have been more popular years ago, but today it feels more like a transit city than a place to stay.

Seminyak

Seminyak is also a very tourist-heavy area with many large hotels, beach clubs, and restaurants. A lot of people think this is “the Bali experience,” but it can feel stressful due to traffic, crowds, and a very commercial vibe. You won’t see many rice fields or natural surroundings here. It is mostly city, shopping, and nightlife.

Canggu

Bali, especially Canggu, has become one of the most popular areas for expats and long-term travelers. It has everything including cafés, gyms, run clubs, coworking spaces, and a social atmosphere, making it perfect for solo travel or shorter stays.

It is quite busy and traffic can be heavy, but you still get a mix of nature, rice fields, and beach life. The beaches are not the most beautiful for swimming, but there are great beach clubs and sunsets.

Good areas to stay include Pererenan, Seseh, and Batu Bolong depending on whether you want quiet or central energy.

Uluwatu

Uluwatu is one of the most beautiful areas in Bali with stunning cliffs, beaches, and ocean views. It offers a more relaxed and upscale vibe compared to Canggu, and it is one of my personal favorite weekend escapes.

You will find everything you need for a perfect holiday including beach clubs, cafés, surf spots, and luxury villas. Bingin is one of the best areas to stay, combining nature, aesthetics, and a great location.

Ubud

Ubud is one of Bali’s most iconic destinations, known for its beautiful rice terraces, jungle scenery, wellness retreats, yoga culture, and unique atmosphere. It’s definitely worth experiencing, especially if you enjoy nature, cafés, culture, and slower days surrounded by greenery.

One thing I would definitely recommend is visiting the Monkey Forest such a unique experience and one of the most famous spots in Ubud ♡ I’d also recommend spending a day at Cretya Beach Club, surrounded by jungle views, pools, and rice terraces for the ultimate Bali vibe.

Personally, I recommend spending a few days here to fully enjoy the atmosphere before continuing to explore other parts of Bali and the different experiences the island has to offer ♡

Sanur

Sanur is a calmer and more family-friendly area. It has a long beachfront promenade where you can cycle or walk, and it is much more relaxed than Seminyak or Canggu.

It is a good choice for families or people who want a quiet stay close to the beach with easy access to restaurants and malls without the chaos of the busier areas.

Nusa Lembongan

One of my favorite places. It takes only around 40 minutes by boat, and it feels like a completely different island. The water is crystal clear and the vibe is very peaceful, almost like the Maldives.

You can explore beaches, go on small adventures, or stay in ocean-view villas. Staying near Jungut Batu is ideal for convenience and views.

Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is incredibly beautiful but very rugged and less developed. It is best for a 1 to 2 night stay or a day trip as the roads are difficult and distances are long.

A driver is highly recommended to explore the island properly. The views are stunning, especially spots like Kelingking Beach and Diamond Beach, but it is not a place for long relaxing stays.

Candidasa

Candidasa is an up-and-coming and more peaceful area on the east coast. It is still very local and less developed with fewer restaurants but some beautiful beachfront villas and resorts.

It is ideal if you want a quiet escape and a more authentic side of Bali away from the tourist crowds.

Amed

Amed is a hidden gem on the northeast coast, known for diving, snorkeling, and black sand beaches. It is very relaxed, quiet, and traditional.

It is perfect for people who want peace, underwater experiences, and a slower pace of life.

Kintamani

Kintamani is a mountain region with incredible views of Mount Batur and Lake Batur. It is one of the most beautiful sunrise spots in Bali.

I would highly recommend staying overnight to experience sunrise without rushing. It feels completely different from the coastal areas, cooler, calmer, and very scenic.

Lovina

Lovina is located in North Bali and is mostly known for dolphin watching. It is still very local and quiet with not much else to do besides nature and relaxation.

I would only recommend staying 1 to 2 nights mainly for the dolphin experience.

Gili Islands

The Gili Islands are tropical, laid-back, and fun. You can visit as a couple, solo, or with friends. There is no motor transport so you get around by bicycle or horse carriage.

The islands offer a mix of beach life, sunsets, snorkeling, and a social atmosphere. Gili Trawangan is the most lively while the others are more quiet and romantic.

Lombok

Lombok is a larger and less developed island next to Bali. I would recommend staying in Kuta Lombok which has some of the most beautiful beaches in Indonesia.

It is much quieter than Bali with amazing surf spots, nature, and a more untouched feel.
