The Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth, Minnesota is a unique landmark that started as a transporter bridge in 1905 before being converted to a vertical-lift bridge in 1929. It's not your average bridge – it can be raised to a height of 135 feet in about a minute and sees around 5,000 lifts per year. The bridge has a cool tradition of horn-blowing exchanges with passing ships, including a special salute on the anniversary of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sinking. Plus, it was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 2017. So, if you're ever in Duluth, make sure to check out this iconic piece of engineering history! Pro tip: Go during sunrise when it's not crowded, or go during sunset for stunning views of Lake Superior.
