Sitting way up at 1,818 meters, Pico do Arieiro has some of the most insane, dramatic views you’ll ever see in Madeira. The best part? You can drive right up to it, making it the perfect spot to catch an epic sunrise or sunset. Honestly, standing above the clouds here just hits different—it literally feels like you’re on top of the world!

A lot of people head up here for the legendary PR1 trail, which takes you all the way to Pico Ruivo (the highest point on the island). It’s an absolute dream for hikers and nature lovers, packed with crazy ridges and stunning views, but it is definitely a challenge.

The PR1 Trail 🥾

Just a heads-up: as of May 1st, 2026, the trail is fully open again! But listen, that doesn't mean you have to hike the entire thing.

PR1 is physically demanding. I’d rate it as moderate-to-difficult, especially if you aren't used to steep, exposed mountain trails. Plus, dealing with the logistics of getting a transfer back from the end of the trail can be a bit of a headache.

If you want all the incredible views without the logistical nightmare, there is a much smarter way to do it:

• 👉 Step 1: Just hike the short 1.2 km section to the famous "Stairway to Heaven" (Pedra Rija viewpoint) and head back. This will only cost you €4.50. It’s easily the most scenic part of the whole trail anyway, and way cheaper than the €10.50 full-trail fee!

• 👉 Step 2: Hop back in your car, drive over to Achada do Teixeira, and hike the PR1.2 path up to Pico Ruivo instead (5.6 km total).

Doing it this way means you still get to see all the absolute highlights, but it’s so much more efficient, way less tiring, and honestly just a much more enjoyable day out. 👌
