If you are visiting the iconic Christ the King statue in Caniço, taking a ride on the Cristo Rei Cablecar (also known as the Teleférico do Garajau) is an absolute must-do. This little cable car sits right at the edge of the dramatic headland and sweeps you down a sheer, breathtaking 150-meter cliff face, delivering jaw-dropping coastal views on the short journey down to the hidden beach below.

It is smooth, quick, and the ultimate way to experience the sheer, vertical scale of Madeira's dramatic volcanic coastline without having to hike your way back up!

What to Do at the Bottom: Garajau Beach 🏖️🐠

The ride down is only half the fun-the real treat is what waits for you at the base of the cliffs:

  • 🤿 A Scuba & Snorkel Paradise: The beach sits right in the heart of the Garajau Partial Nature Reserve. Because fishing has been banned here since the 1980s, the crystal-clear water is absolutely teeming with marine life, including friendly giant dusky groupers, manta rays, and wild octopuses. It is widely considered one of the best diving spots in Europe!

  • 🍹 The Beach Bar Lounge: There is a fantastic, relaxed little cafe-bar right on the pebble beach. Grab an outdoor table, order a cold drink or a fresh snack, and just listen to the waves crashing against the rocks.

  • 🚶‍♂️ Relax on the Shore: The beach is a peaceful, sheltered pebble cove surrounded by towering volcanic cliffs, making it a wonderful, secluded spot to catch some sun away from the main resort crowds.

💡 Inside Tips for Your Visit:

  • 🎟️ Super Budget-Friendly: Unlike some of the bigger tourist cable cars on the island, this one is incredibly cheap (usually only a few euros for a round-trip ticket), making it a total no-brainer addition to your day.

  • 🎒 Pack Your Swim Gear: Do not leave your swimwear, towel, and water shoes in the car! Even if you just want to wade into the incredibly clear shallows, you will definitely want to get in the water once you see how beautiful it is.

  • 🚗 Easy Parking: You can use the main paved parking lot right at the Cristo Rei monument site, which gives you direct, flat access to the cable car station.

🚌 Bus Info:

Getting out here from Funchal via public transport is incredibly straightforward and drops you right near the top station:

  • Hop on the SIGA Bus 155 (Route 705) right from the capital.

  • It drops you off just a short, flat walk away from the monument site, where you can head straight for the cable car entrance!

It’s the ultimate mini-adventure to pair with a stroll around the clifftop gardens and a gorgeous Atlantic sunset! 🌅🚠✨
