If there is one beach that has absolutely taken over social media-and for damn good reason-it is the world-famous black sand beach of Praia do Porto do Seixal. Tucked beneath the dramatic volcanic cliffs of the wild north coast, this beach looks like something straight out of Jurassic Park or a tropical Hawaiian dreamscape.

Unlike most of Madeira's rocky pebble shores, here you will find a stunning stretch of incredibly soft, fine black volcanic sand contrasting beautifully with emerald-green mountains, cascading waterfalls in the distance, and the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Atlantic. It is an absolute visual masterpiece and a non-negotiable bucket-list stop!

💡 Why It’s an Absolute Must-Visit:

  • 🏖️ Soft, Natural Black Sand: No painful pebbles here! The sand is beautifully fine, soft, and naturally dark. It feels amazing to walk on and serves as the ultimate moody, high-vibe backdrop for your photos.

  • 🌋 The Dramatic Emerald Backdrop: The way the towering, razor-sharp volcanic ridges—draped in lush, subtropical greenery—plunge directly into the ocean right next to the sand is mind-blowing. On misty mornings, the atmosphere is pure magic.

  • 🏊‍♂️ Protected & Calm Swimming: Thanks to a massive concrete breakwater pier at the edge of the harbor, the wild, crashing waves of the north coast are kept at bay. This creates a beautifully calm, sheltered natural pool area that is perfect for swimming and wading safely.

💡 Inside Tips for Your Visit:

  • 🎟️ 100% Free with Great Facilities: There is completely free public access to the beach, and it comes equipped with handy on-site facilities including outdoor showers and public toilets right by the entrance track.

  • 🌅 Arrive Early for Peak Magic: Because this is one of the most famous spots on the entire island, the small parking area down by the sand fills up incredibly fast. Aim to arrive by 9:00 AM to catch the soft morning light, beat the tour crowds, and snag a prime parking spot!

  • 👙 Bring a Dark Towel & Swimsuit: While the volcanic sand doesn't ruin your clothes, it can be a bit stubborn to shake out of light-colored fabrics. Wearing a darker swimsuit makes your beach day entirely worry-free.

🚌 Bus Info:

Getting out to this northern paradise from Funchal via public transport is a fantastic, budget-friendly option that saves you driving the winding mountain passes:

  • Hop on the SIGA Bus 139 or the SIGA Bus 150 from the capital.

  • Both routes travel right along the scenic northern coastline and drop you off in the main village area of Seixal, leaving you with just a short, lovely downhill walk straight to the edge of the sand!

It is the ultimate celebration of Madeira's raw, volcanic beauty—an absolute paradise you cannot leave the island without experiencing! 🌊🏝️✨
