If you love dramatic, volcanic landscapes, you have to add Ribeira da Janela to your Madeira road trip. Located on the rugged north coast, this quiet little parish is home to less than 300 people, but it’s famous for the massive, mystical rock formations rising right out of the ocean.
Just about 200 meters off the shore-right where the river meets the sea-you’ll spot three distinct volcanic islets:
🪨 Ilheu Zinho: The baby of the group (the smallest one).
🪨 Ilhéu da Rama: The middle-sized one.
🪨 Ilhéu Alto (or Ilhéu Comprido): The absolute giant of the family.
That largest sea stack is a total icon. It stands a massive 40 meters high-which is basically the size of a 13-story building! If you look closely at the very top, there’s a small, natural opening in the stone. That little opening is actually a "window," which is exactly how the village, river, and valley got their name (Ribeira da Janela literally translates to “river of the window”).
🕵️♂️ Inside scoop: It’s actually pretty tricky to spot the window if you’re just standing down on the pebble beach. For the best view, head up the hill on the left side of the coast to find the perfect angle!
It’s an incredibly photogenic, wild spot and a perfect place to pull over, stretch your legs, and marvel at the power of the Atlantic. You definitely don’t want to miss it!
