If you want to see a completely different side of Madeira, the PR8 trail is an absolute must-do. Unlike the lush, green jungle paths on the rest of the island, this hike takes you along the dramatic, sun-drenched eastern peninsula. It feels like walking on Mars! You’ll be treated to rugged volcanic cliffs, unique desert-like plants, and crashing ocean waves on both sides of the trail.
It is a wildly beautiful out-and-back trek that leads you all the way to the "Dragon's Tail" tip of the island. The views out here are completely raw and powerful-honestly, they will blow you away!
💡 Inside Tips for Your Visit:
👶 Bringing family? This trail is absolutely fantastic for active older kids who love a bit of an adventure. However, you’ll definitely want to skip it for independent toddlers. The peninsula is completely exposed to the elements and can get some incredibly sudden, intense wind gusts. If you are bringing little ones, make sure they are secure in a sturdy hiking carrier!
🎒 Quick Pack Tip: Because there is absolutely zero shade out here, don't forget to pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and a windbreaker jacket!
🚌 Bus Info:
Getting to the trailhead without a rental car is incredibly easy and stress-free:
Just hop on the SIGA Bus 113 (Route 702 or 827) from either Funchal or Machico.
The bus goes all the way to the end of the line and drops you off right at the start of the trail.
It’s one of the most iconic and unique hikes on the entire island, so lace up your trainers and get ready for an epic day out! 🥾✨
