If you want to experience the absolute crown jewel of Madeira’s levada walks, this is the one. The Levada do Caldeirão Verde takes you deep into a lush, prehistoric green paradise, winding along cliff faces, under waterfalls, and through the mountains until you reach a massive, jaw-dropping waterfall canyon.
It’s an out-and-back trail that takes about 4 to 4.5 hours total. The best part? It is mostly flat the entire way, but it is quite a long trek! If you want to keep an eye on your progress, you can check out the full route map on AllTrails here.
🚨 Essential Gear You Need to Pack:
This isn't just a standard walk in the park-you need to come prepared for the terrain!
🔦 Bring a torch or headlamp: You will pass through four pitch-black, low-ceiling tunnels carved right through the rock. You’ll need your hands free because you have to duck your head in some sections!
🧥 Pack a waterproof jacket: Those tunnels drip heavily from the mountain springs above, and you’ll likely walk under a few mini-waterfalls along the path.
💡 Inside Tips for Your Visit:
🏡 The Starting Point: The trail kicks off at the beautiful Queimadas Forestry Park. Make sure to arrive early so you can check out the fairytale-like thatched cottages at the entrance—they look like something straight out of Hansel and Gretel!
🚗 Parking: Parking is paid (around €3 for the day), but because this is one of the most famous hikes on the island, the lot completely fills up by 9:30 AM. Aim to be an early bird to grab a space!
👶 Bringing family? This hike is absolutely brilliant for active older kids who can easily handle the walking distance. However, it is not recommended for small toddlers walking on their own. The trail gets incredibly narrow in sections with very high, steep cliff drops, so if you are bringing little ones, they definitely need to be secure in a proper hiking backpack.
It’s a long day out, but walking through that emerald-green jungle is an adventure you’ll never forget! 👌
