If you want to experience the raw, untamed edge of Madeira, Ponta de São Lourenço is an absolute must-visit. Located on the easternmost tip of the island, this dramatic peninsula offers a landscape that looks completely different from anywhere else in Madeira. Instead of the lush, green forests and misty levadas found inland, São Lourenço is a striking, sun-drenched desert landscape filled with rich volcanic sands, deep red rock formations, and sheer cliffs that plunge violently into the ocean.
It is the oldest geological part of the island, where you can stand on the narrow peninsula and watch the calm, deep-blue waters of the south coast battle the wild, crashing waves of the north Atlantic simultaneously.
💡 What to See & Do (Without Doing the Full Hike):
📸 The Ponta do Rosto Viewpoint: If you want jaw-dropping panoramic views without breaking a sweat, drive straight up to Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto. It sits right on the northern edge of the peninsula and offers a stunning look down the entire spine of the jagged red cliffs. On a clear day, you can see all the way over to the neighboring island of Porto Santo!
🌅 An Epic Sunrise Spot: Because it faces directly east, this peninsula is widely considered the absolute best spot on the entire island to catch a sunrise. Watching the sun break over the open ocean and illuminate the volcanic cliffs in bright shades of orange and pink is pure magic.
🏖️ Prainha Beach: Tucked neatly into the base of the peninsula, you'll find Prainha-one of Madeira's very few natural, black sand beaches. It’s a gorgeous, sheltered cove that is perfect for a refreshing dip after exploring the viewpoints.
🚌 Bus Info:
Getting out to this wild landscape is incredibly straightforward even if you aren't driving a rental car:
Just hop on the SIGA Bus 113 (Route 702 or 827) from Funchal or Machico.
The bus runs all the way to the roundabout at the very end of the regional road, dropping you off right where the peninsula opens up.
It is a wildly beautiful, elemental landscape that perfectly showcases the powerful volcanic origins of Madeira! 🌋✨
