If you want a hike that delivers the absolute ultimate coastal views in Madeira, the Vereda do Larano route on AllTrails is a total showstopper. This classic point-to-point trail connects the hills of Machico to the lovely seaside village of Porto da Cruz, taking you from peaceful, rural valleys right onto the edge of massive, jaw-dropping ocean cliffs.
The scenery changes constantly-one minute you’re walking through a quiet forest track, and the next you are looking out at the endless blue Atlantic and the iconic Penha d’Águia (Eagle Rock) looming in the distance.
🚨 Vertigo Warning & Trail Tips:
⚠️ Mind the drops: While the path is well-maintained and doesn't require intense, strenuous climbing, it is not for the faint of heart. Once you hit the coastal section, you will be walking along a narrow cliff-side path with massive, sheer drops down to the waves below. If you suffer from severe vertigo, you’ll definitely want to skip this one!
🥾 Grip is non-negotiable: Make sure you wear solid trail shoes. The path can get incredibly muddy and slippery after it rains, and even when it's dry, there are some eroded sections with loose, slippery dirt.
🗺️ How the Route Works:
Because this is a 12km point-to-point hike, you have to plan your logistics ahead of time:
The Best Direction: Most hikers recommend starting on the Machico side (near the old Caniçal tunnel). The first 5km are a super easy, flat walk along the Levada do Caniçal passing local farmlands.
The Highlight: After a short incline, you’ll suddenly pop out at the breathtaking Boca do Risco viewpoint gap. From here, you turn left and spend the next hour hugging the dramatic coastline on the true Vereda do Larano path, finishing with a scenic descent right into Porto da Cruz—the perfect place to celebrate with a cold drink or a bite to eat by the beach!
Transport Tip: Since you start and end in different towns, public transport is actually your best friend here! You can easily hop on a SIGA bus (like the 113) from Funchal to reach the start, and catch a return bus from Porto da Cruz. If you are driving, you'll either need to call a local taxi at the end to take you back to your car, or treat it as an out-and-back trail by turning around at Boca do Risco.
It is a moderate but long day out, serving up some of the most dramatic and unforgettable cliff-side hiking on the entire island! 🏔️✨
