If you’ve ever seen a postcard of Madeira, chances are you’ve seen these beauties! The iconic Santana houses are the legendary symbol of the island-small, triangular stone homes with steep, thatched straw roofs and bright red and blue painted shutters. They are absolutely charming and look like something straight out of a storybook.

The main cluster right in the center of Santana town is completely free to walk around and photograph, and it's super easy, flat access for everyone. While you're wandering around, you'll notice a couple of the houses have been turned into cute little souvenir or flower shops you can pop into.

🚨 Inside Tips for Your Visit:

  • Avoid the crowds: Because this is such a legendary spot, the big tour buses roll in constantly between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. If you want to have the village square completely to yourself for those perfect, crowd-free photos, aim to get here either early at 9:00 AM or later in the afternoon after 4:30 PM.

  • 🚌 Getting there: It’s super easy to visit using public transport. Just hop on the SIGA Bus 56 (Route 801) or Bus 103 from Funchal, and it will drop you right in the center of Santana town, just a short stroll from the houses.

It's a quick but essential stop on your Madeira road trip that you definitely can't skip!
