If swimming in volcanic lava pools is on your Madeira bucket list, Porto Moniz is the ultimate place to do it. Located on the dramatic north-western tip of the island, these pools are filled naturally by the rising tide of the Atlantic Ocean, giving you a completely unique place to swim surrounded by stunning volcanic rock.
Before you jump in, there’s one golden rule for Porto Moniz: bring water shoes! The volcanic rocks can be incredibly sharp and slippery, so you’ll definitely want them to protect your feet while getting in and out of the water.
The Two Different Pool Areas
A lot of people don't realize there are actually two totally different areas to choose from here:
🦀 The Natural Pools (Free): Located right by the Cachalote restaurant, these pools are completely untouched and wild. They are incredibly rugged and dramatic, making them the cooler spot for photos, but they don't have facilities.
🏖️ The Lido Pools (Paid): Entry is only about €3 per person, and it is well worth it if you want a more relaxing swim. This area has been smoothed out with flat sunbathing decks, changing rooms, and lifeguards on duty.
🚨 Inside Tips for Your Visit:
⏰ How to beat the crowds: Because this is a major highlight on the island, the big tour buses descend heavily between 11:30 AM and 3:00 PM. To enjoy a genuinely peaceful swim without the chaos, aim to arrive before 10:00 AM or wait until the afternoon after 4:00 PM.
🚌 Bus Info: If you're using public transport, you can take the SIGA Rodoeste Bus 80 or 139 from Funchal. Just keep in mind that this is a long, winding 3-hour journey each way! Make sure to check the afternoon return times carefully so you don't miss the last bus back.
🚗 Parking: There are plenty of paid blue-zone spaces scattered around the surrounding streets, but it can get busy. There are a few paid car parks close by, and I highly recommend heading straight to this car park here to save yourself driving in circles!
