Nestled at the head of a beautiful bay, Kenmare is one of those towns that’s easy to settle into. I remember arriving and immediately noticing the colourful buildings lining the streets, giving the place a warm, welcoming feel. It’s not a big town, but that’s part of its charm. Everything feels close and walkable, which makes it perfect for a slow wander.
I spent time drifting in and out of small shops and stopping in pubs where traditional music was already playing, especially lively during the summer months. What I liked most was how relaxed it felt. There’s energy and life, but it never feels rushed or overwhelming. It’s the kind of place where you can enjoy a quiet coffee in the morning and find a great atmosphere in the evening without changing location.
Kenmare also works brilliantly as a base. Sitting between the Ring of Kerry and the Beara Peninsula, it feels well placed for exploring some of the most scenic parts of the southwest. After a day on the road, coming back to the town felt grounding and comfortable, which is something I really appreciated.
Kenmare manages to balance a small town calm with just enough buzz to keep things interesting, and that combination makes it a place I’d happily return to.
