Perched atop Greenan Mountain near Burt, the Grianán of Aileach is one of Ireland’s most iconic ancient stone forts. Dating back over a thousand years, this circular stone fortress offers a fascinating glimpse into early medieval life and the strategic importance of this site, which once served as a royal stronghold for the Kings of Aileach.

The fort itself is remarkably well-preserved, with thick stone walls and a commanding position that provides panoramic views over Inishowen, Lough Swilly, and beyond. On a clear day, the vistas stretch across Donegal and even toward County Derry, making it one of the most spectacular lookout points in the region.

Visitors can walk around the outer ramparts, climb the interior steps, and imagine the lives of the people who once defended this hilltop fortress. The surrounding area also offers gentle walking trails and open fields, making it a peaceful spot to explore after taking in the historic site.

The Grianán of Aileach is ideal for history enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone drawn to dramatic landscapes and ancient monuments. The combination of heritage, elevation, and sweeping coastal and countryside views makes it a must-see when exploring Donegal.

Note: The site is fully accessible on foot, but weather can be exposed and windy at the summit, so sturdy footwear and warm layers are recommended.
