At the southern tip of the Lecale peninsula, near the village of Killough, St John’s Lighthouse stands as a striking sentinel overlooking the Irish Sea and the entrance to Dundrum Bay. Its bold black tower with yellow bands is instantly recognisable against the rugged coastline, and its powerful light has guided ships safely along this once treacherous stretch of water since the mid-1800s.
Rising to around 40 metres above the rocky shore, it is the tallest onshore lighthouse in Ireland. Originally built in 1844 and later raised to its full height, the lighthouse played a vital role in maritime safety, warning vessels of the rocky coast and guiding them into nearby harbours.
Today, while the tower itself is usually closed to the public, the surrounding headland and old keepers’ cottages create a wonderfully atmospheric setting. A short coastal walk brings visitors close to the lighthouse’s base, where the sound of surf against rock and wide sea views make it a favourite spot for photographers, walkers, and nature lovers.
St John’s Lighthouse combines maritime history with wild, beautiful scenery, standing as both a beacon of the past and a highlight of the County Down coast.
